That gap is the reason fire alarm installation cost is so difficult to research. Most published figures are expressed per square foot, and square footage is not what the system is priced against. Devices are.
Understanding what a commercial fire alarm system costs means understanding five things: what appears on the bid, how system architecture changes the math, what your building’s condition adds, what California requires that other states do not, and what the system costs to own after the installer leaves.
Per-square-foot estimates fail because fire alarm systems are priced by device count, and device count is set by occupancy classification and building layout rather than floor area.
